How do you measure the height of a horse?

You measure a horse in hands. Every four inches is a hand. Imagine a closed hand sideways, that’s pretty close to four inches. Now start measuring from the ground sideways hand over sideways hand, all the way to the top of the withers. That’s the bump between the next and the back. The distance from the ground to the top of the withers doesn’t change if the horse is standing still but if you were to measure the height of a horse form the ground to the top of their head, the horse’s height could range from 8 feet to 1 foot. That’s why you measure to the top of the withers. Average horse height is about 15 hands, or 60 inches or 5 feet.

How tall is an average horse?

Answered:
Somewhere in the 15 ish hand area. Less than 14.2 and you’re a pony and over 16.2 and you are crazy tall. Unless of course we’re talking miniature horses, but I didn’t think so.
